Computational cracks 'semantic barriers' between databases
Article Abstract:
Bruce Schatz and Hsinchun Chen of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications made headway towards a way to search similar concepts in data bases of different fields. They analyzed 10 million science and engineering abstracts for co-occurring terms which presumably link records by concept.

'Real-time' oceanography adapts to sea changes
Article Abstract:
A study of the freshwater-saltwater front in the Haro Strait served as a test of 'real-time' oceanography. Rather than collecting data for later analysis, a computer model of the front directed robotic submarines, which continually fed back data into the model.
