Article Abstract:
Vendors of CAD technology are extremely aware of the need to constantly adapt to changing user needs. Most recently, software vendors have linked to establish the object linking and embedding (OLE) for Design and Modelling (D&M) initiative. This aims to encourage companies to share 3D design data produced on different proprietary CAD systems. It will use Microsoft's component object model technology to allow 3D geometry to be transferred between compliant CAD systems. The CAD market is offering increasingly distinct approaches to 3D modelling, and it can be hard to choose the most appropriate technology.

Virtually ready: User inhibitions rather than technological limitations now prevent companies using virtual reality to streamline product development processes
Article Abstract:
The Engineering Link used virtual reality (VR) to win a contract to refurbish a set of passenger carriages. The company was able to produce realistic on-screen VR models of the vehicle interiors, and the first of the refurbished trains is already in use. However due to the highly conservative nature of the railway industry, no other train operator has made use of VR simulation. Company director Martin Hayhoe believes that VR will eventually become a valuable and even indispensable business and engineering tool.

System failure
Article Abstract:
A new report from the UK's Health and Safety Executive analyses how human factors affect health and safety issues. The report 'Reducing Error and Influencing Behaviour' reveals that accidents are almost always caused by bad management and not by individual carelessness. The document stresses that where situations are likely to lead to human error, there will be clear and recognisable warning signs which can be identified by an efficient and aware management.
