Watson encouraged Germany to invest more effort and money in genetic research in a May 1997 speech to a molecular medicine congress in Berlin. Watson, who co-discovered the structure of DNA, offended some when he charged that Germany never fully punished some Nazi-era geneticists.

Reactor project presses ahead despite protests
Article Abstract:
Germany is going forward with plans to build a research nuclear reactor called FRM-II in spite of US protests over the fact that the reactor uses highly enriched uranium and violates nonproliferation standards. The scientific community has mixed reactions to the controversy.

European labs fight back against cuts
Article Abstract:
Germany's 1997 budget contains cuts amounting to 3.7% in funding of domestic research programs and in contributions to international labs. Contributions will be cut to the European Space Agency, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and CERN.
