Atrial fibrillation and cognitive disorders in older people
Article Abstract:
Prevention of cognitive impairment in the elderly should take into consideration treatment of atrial fibrillation and its consequences. A study has been carried out in Italy in 255 inpatients aged 71+ to find out whether a correlation between chronic nonrheumatic atrial fibrillation (CNRAF) and cognitive disorders in older people who are not demented exists. Results of the study show a relationship between the two conditions. The association seems to be related to chronic cerebral ischemia or cerebral lacunar infarcts.

The management of adverse clinical events in nursing homes: a 1-year survey study
Article Abstract:
Research on 10 nonprofit nursing homes in Italy shows that physician personnel management has a significant impact on patient outcomes, specifically adverse clinical events. While staff physicians rendered appropriate diagnoses in most cases, public health system physicians, who are typically hired to cover nights and weekends, had a high rate of patient hospitalization, approximately six times that of staff physicians.

Subcortical vascular lesions predict functional recovery after rehabilitation in patients with L-dopa refractory parkinsonism
