Computer usage: PHA management
Article Abstract:
The Las Vegas public housing authority has achieved a 20 percent attrition-based staff reduction since obtaining a computer-based property management system in 1977. Processing of paperwork has been speeded by direct data entry of tenant information into the computer system, which calculates program eligibility based on complex government formulas. The system automatically matches prospective tenants from its electronic waiting list with suitable dwellings that become available. The computer system has also helped the authority track rent delinquency and processing of maintenance orders. The current system has 40 video display terminals at nine sites connected to an MAI 'Basic Four' MPX 8030 computer.

Computer usage: housing rehabilitation
Article Abstract:
A micro-computer can help handle housing rehabilitation project information management activity such as collecting, processing, storing, filing, correlating, and interpreting data. A good computer system can handle management data reporting, word processing, scheduling of project management, and construction specifications. Database management has been made feasible and economical through introduction of powerful microcomputers and computer software programs such as dBase and Condor 3. A company may have to design and implement a custom specification system to meet rehabilitation specialists' needs when off-the-shelf software packages are unavailable.

HUD's computer plans
Article Abstract:
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is planning to require the private-sector side of subsidized housing to automate using computers. New goals stipulate that HUD will enter a contract with National Computer Systems to oversee the collection and retrieval of tenant characteristics for a number of HUD-subsidized programs. Medium-sized public housing agencies (PHAs) will be automated first, followed by smaller PHAs. One aspect of the automation efforts that will be emphasized is quality control so that PHAs can reduce instances of errors. Important considerations when automating PHAs include IBM-compatibility and choosing software.
