A comparison of measures used to assess effectiveness of the transdermal nicotine patch at 1 year
Article Abstract:
Abstinence rates for studies on the 12-month outcome of the nicotine transdermal patch using the three measures of point prevalence, continuous and prolonged abstinence, were compared. A significant effect of the active patch was noted in all studies using continuous or prolonged abstinence as the outcome measure, producing at least double the rate of success at one year. The stability of continuous and prolonged abstinence over time, compared to point prevalence, makes them better predictors of the long-term health effects of cessation and maintenance of an intervention.

Retracing the steps of Marco Polo: from clinical trials to diffusion of interventions for smokers
Article Abstract:
A series of four controlled trials was conducted to assess the efficacy and implementation of general practice interventions for smokers. A feasibility study was then undertaken to evaluate the diffusion of a smoking cessation program in Australia and internationally. Results showed that the intervention can be disseminated among a large number of general practitioners in Australia.
