Assisted suicide
Article Abstract:
The Death with Dignity Act was passed in Oregon in Nov. 1994, allowing terminally ill patients to request in writing a prescription that will end their lives. Two witnesses, who must attest to the competence of the patient and the freedom of the act, are required. Physicians are required to fully inform patients about their medical condition and the alternative treatments available. Physicians are immune to any kind of prosecution provided they follow the regulations on legalized suicide.

Kevorkian on trial - again
Article Abstract:
Dr. Jack Kevorkian stands on trial for assisted suicide involving bone cancer patient Dr. Ali Khalili and Merian Frederick, who suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease. Khalili and Frederick died from carbon monoxide inhalation using Kevorkian's equipment. Michigan law frees doctors from liability for their patients' death when their intention is to relieve pain or discomfort rather than to cause death despite the riskiness of the medical procedure.

Assisted suicide
Article Abstract:
Stephen Carter's article in 'The New York Times Magazine' regarding the use of the 14th Amendment as a support for the right to assisted suicide are flawed in several aspects. First, the provision on the right to privacy does not cover assisted suicide since it is not considered as a clear and traditional liberty. Second, a right accorded to one sector of the society does not mean that all of the citizens can avail of said right.
