Beating the urge: Implications of research into substance-related desires
Article Abstract:
Psychological approaches are required despite the advent of improved pharmacological treatments to alleviate substance-related desires. An argument that current psychological approaches to desire do not adequately incorporate our knowledge about the factors that trigger, maintain, and terminate episodes of desire and that instigation and maintenance of desires involve both associative and elaborative processes is presented.

Delay discounting is associated with substance use in college students
Article Abstract:
This article explores the link between impulsivity and the development and maintenance of substance use disorder. The authors, testing delay discounting in which individuals discount the value of rewards to be delivered after some delay, conclude individuals who reported more illicit drug use at a younger age of first use more often discounted the value of a future hypothetical reward more severely than their peers.
