Birmingham revisited: cultural studies in a post-Soviet world
Article Abstract:
A renewed interest in the early studies of the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (BCCCS), and their Fabianism derived ideas, will help cultural studies in a post-Soviet world of localisms. Fabianism, a form of evolutionary socialism developed in the UK by George Bernard Shaw and Sydney Webb, advocated gradualism rather than revolution. Although the later studies of the BCCCS tended to lean towards totalitarian Marxism, the demise of the Soviet system and the increasing tendency towards localism could bring about a revival of the essentially British brand of socialism.

Mexican caricature and the politics of popular culture
Article Abstract:
The change in the caricatured representation of the Mexican, from an alert and troublesome fighter, to that of the dozing sombrero, throws light on the way the world perceives the popular culture of that country. The one party rule of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional has resulted in the institutionalization of authoritarianism, bribery and protectionism which has made some Mexicans indifferent to issues. The dozing sombrero effectively symbolizes such a culture. A change in outlook is necessary for Mexicans to compete economically with the Americans and Canadians.
