Nationwide practices for screening and reporting prenatal cocaine abuse: a survey of teaching programs
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to evaluate the role of physicians in prenatal cocaine abuse screening, legislation awareness and treatment of cocaine abusers. Questionnaires were distributed among 81 pediatric programs and 81 obstetric programs in 42 states. Maternal history was used by 81% of the physicians and urine examination by 36% of the physicians to assess cocaine abuse by expectant mothers, but all the physicians did not admit to a fixed screening policy. Legislative awareness regarding cocaine abuse reporting was prevalent among 52% of the respondents and medical, social and legal intervention was found to be necessary in cocaine abuse treatment.

Child abuse and neglect from an indigenous Australian's perspective
Article Abstract:
Child abuse was non-existent before Australia was colonized. The advent of colonization was detrimental to aboriginal family life. The population decreased greatly and the average life expectancy is 20 years shorter than for white Australians. They represent half of all the prisoners in Australia and are twenty times more likely to be imprisoned than white Australians. Native villages lack basic services such as housing, proper sanitation and running water. Alcoholism and drug addiction are rampant and lead to sexually-transmitted diseases, violence and child abuse.
