Cognitive and psychological correlates of smoking abstinence, and predictors of successful cessation
Article Abstract:
A literature review suggests that responses to incentive stimuli and the ability to inhibit reflexive responses, both of which is associated with normal functioning in brain reward pathways, might be weakened during acute abstinence from chronic drug use. In an ongoing study, 82 smokers, abstinent overnight before two separate testing occasions, were assessed after administration of nicotine and placebo lozenges.

Heterogeneity in phenotypes based on smoking status in the Great Lakes Smoker Sibling Registry
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate whether 52 same-sex sibling pairs discordant for ever-smoking differed on psychiatric cofactors, alcohol and caffeine use, and responses to initial exposure to smoking. Ever-smokers scored significantly higher on measures of novelty seeking, depression, and childhood ADHD, and on alcohol dependence, and alcohol and caffeine intake.

Explaining adolescents' smoking and drinking behavior: the concept of smoker and drinker prototypes in relation to variables of the theory of planned behavior
Article Abstract:
The concept of social images or prototypes is embedded into a theoretical model called the prototype/willingness model and this study addresses the relative value of this model in relation to the theory of planned behavior. Positive relations were observed between smoker and drinker prototypes and adolescents' intention and willingness to smoke and drink in future.
