Disneyland and Coney Island: reflections on the evolution of the modern amusement park
Article Abstract:
Both Coney Island and Disneyland represent the origin of outdoor entertainment activity and its cultural development in late 19th and mid-20th century America. While Coney Island can be accredited with introducing aquatic-based amusements and technological devices such as rides and games, which incorporated foreign culture, fantasy and attitudes in a fun-filled environment, Disneyland's use of Walt Disney's cartoon characters and longer-lasting, superior material, has accounted for the latter's continuing success and the former's collapse.
