European policy issues
Article Abstract:
Two articles that offer insights into the pensions provision debate are analyzed. One article, written by S. Shaver, tackles the universality or selectivity in income support for older people. The other article, written by E. Reynaud, covers the debate over public pensions in the European Union. The two authors approach their subjects in contrasting styles. Reynaud chooses to analyze changes in policy arising from socio-economic developments in Europe, while Shaver looks into the redistributive effects of financial support for aging populations.

Current and future incomes for older people
Article Abstract:
The present and future incomes for older people in the UK are examined by comparing current levels and sources of income for both older and younger people, analyzing trends in pensioners' incomes and reviewing present policy debate. Since income in old age depends on pension provision and state provision, policy debates in 1995 centered on four key issues, namely, provision for women, financial circumstances and long-term care, sufficiency of retirement incomes and the structure of pension schemes.
