Extinction of responding maintained by timeout from avoidance
Article Abstract:
Rats have been observed to persist in pressing levers when corresponding shocks in the levers are eliminated. The rats in the experiment had been trained to respond to one lever postponed shock on a free-operant avoidance schedule and to another lever that produces two minutes of rest from shock. When all shocks were deleted, avoidance is reduced but timeout response was maintained. When shock rates were eliminated on consecutive sessions, avoidance lever responses became extinct at a faster rate. In the two set-ups, timeout extinction rates were significantly delayed.

Variable-interval reinforcement schedule value influences responding following REM Sleep Deprivation
Article Abstract:
The sensitivity of the positively reinforced respond, to the rate of reinforcement under constant sleep deprivation levels is determined. The effects of this sleep deprivation in rats were examined, using a variable-interval reinforcement schedule.

Effects of sleep deprivation on free-operant avoidance
Article Abstract:
An experiment with rats examines the impact of sleep deprivation on avoidance responding, or negatively reinforced response behavior. Findings suggest sleep deprivation increased the rates of avoidance responding in rats.
