Helping without harming: a reply to Feld and Fetkewicz
Article Abstract:
The several factors and clinical implications should be considered when working with patients with a history of childhood sexual abuse, whether it be corroborated or not. The therapist should inform the patient about the risks and benefits of assessing the veracity/accuracy of such memories. The clinical and legal issues involved in recovered memory are multi-layered. However, efforts must be directed at developing a knowledge base about traumatic memory as well as safe and effective treatment strategies.

Response to Herbert S. Strean
Article Abstract:
A therapist clarifies a misunderstanding of his work. The use of clinical judgement and post-modern approach is used to interpret the implications of client questions at the start of treatment. The idea that client questions at the beginning of treatment is an indication of anxiety is implied as a subjective reaction in clients and is not assumed as a mechanism to disguise apprehensions. It is also claimed that self-disclosure does not eliminate the client's 'right to be understood.'

Comment on James C. Raines, "Self-disclosure in Clinical Social Work." (Clinical Social Work Journal, vol 24, 1996, p.362)
Article Abstract:
Client questions, focusing on the therapist at the beginning of a treatment process, are perceived as the client's way of expressing anxiety. Directly answering these questions can result in feelings of mistrust and frustrations on the part of the client later in the process. However, when the client's questions are redirected and focused on himself, it conveys the therapist's empathy with his curiosity and willingness to help, thus producing better therapeutic results.
