In bed with the enemy: Some ideas on the connections between neoliberalism and the welfare state
Article Abstract:
The neoliberal states such as the UK, the US and Australia employ anti-welfare rhetoric partly to disguise a fundamental reliance upon forms of governance which incorporate major elements of what has come to be known as the welfare state, is suggested. It is concluded that the welfare state appears as one of the necessary conditions of its existence by underwriting the flexible labor market and managing populations such that the fabric of society remains intact.

Gender, ageing and the 'new social settlement': The importance of developing a holistic approach to care policies
Article Abstract:
The 'new social settlement' is changing the roles of family formation and the female labor market participation, which is taking Europe towards an adult worker family model. Policies regarding care to elderly people must be framed to address the social risks likely to arise from greater family fluidity and the erosion of a male breadwinner model family.
