Individual differences in the context of smoking lapse episodes
Article Abstract:
Individual differences in the characteristics of episodes of lapse behavior among smokers are related to the contexts of initial lapses to smoking. The context in which smokers lapsed was found to be determined by individual differences in nicotine dependence, negative affectivity, history of drinking and smoking, and coping style. Surges in urge and in negative affect cause more nicotine-dependent smokers to lapse, while less nicotine-dependent smokers exhibit a greater likelihood to lapse when drinking alcohol. The most nicotine-dependent smokers are also the most likely to pinpoint stress as causing their relapse.

Smoking topography in tobacco chippers and dependent smokers
Article Abstract:
Both tobacco chippers (CH) and dependent smokers (DS) have identical smoking topography in the laboratory and the natural environment. The changes in the pre- to postsmoking levels of saliva cotinine and carbon dioxide are the same for CH and DS. They are exposed to the same amount of smoke from cigarettes. The postsmoking nicotine levels in the blood of CH and DS are similar. Idiosyncracies and situational factors affect the smoking patterns of CH more than that of DS.
