Kulturkritik or anti-Americanism? The reception of recent popular American cinema in West Germany, with special focus on 'Platoon.'
Article Abstract:
A perceived anti-American culture movement in West Germany has been disproved by the reviews and reception of the movie 'Platoon.' Rather, the unfavorable West German reception to the American-produced war movies 'Red Dawn' and 'Heimat-Trilogie: The River, Country, and Places in the Heart' was due to their unacceptable plots. Reviews of 'Platoon' in fact revealed less anti-Americanist views than had been expected. However, American producers may expect overt criticism from a young group of West German critics in the future.

"The comfort lies in all the things you can do": the Australian drive-in - cinema of distraction
Article Abstract:
The Hoyts Skyline, the first Australian drive-in, opened in Burwood, Melbourne, Australia, in Feb 1954. It proved extremely popular, and more drive-ins followed. The history of the Australian drive-in since the 1950s can be regarded as the history of the conflicting cultural, social, industrial and economic pressures which have shaped Australian society since the second world war. Many drive-ins have now closed down, but some have survived due to the dedication of individuals.
