Depressive symptoms and mentally ill chemical abusers' perception of the treatment environment in residential settings
Article Abstract:
There are significant associations between subscales of the Community Oriented Program Evaluation Scale (COPES) and depressive symptoms among mentally ill chemical abusers in a therapeutic community and community residences. As measured by the COPES in a therapeutic community as compared to two community residences, differences in mentally ill chemical abusers' perceptions of the treatment environment generally matched the expected differences between the treatment modalities. It is suggested that evaluations of treatment environments with instruments such as the COPES should view depressive symptoms as a potential threat to the validity of findings.
