Life history as dialogical activity: 'If you ask me the right questions, I could tell you.'
Article Abstract:
The intersubjective constitution of life histories necessitates a dialogical approach that highlights their negotiated aspect. The negotiability of the exchange acts through the several forms of narrative fixing and asymmetry of role distribution. This negotiability of the narrative and focalization are discussed by Clifford Shaw and Barbara Myerhoff. Narrative and rhetoric as techniques of analysis further the understanding of the dialogical aspects of life histories.
