Local talk in the global village: an intercultural comparison of American and German talk shows
Article Abstract:
An analysis of 13 German and 38 American talk shows reveals that talk shows exhibit national characteristics and thereby resist an international mass culture. American talk shows focus on the individual and the private while the German emphasize the public and the political. The therapeutic function of American talk shows is absent from German talk shows. American talk shows create drama through action, the German through the talk itself. American talk shows deal with social or political issues or provide entertainment, the German conflate all these elements in a single episode. The host is more important in American talk shows, and in German talk shows, the setting.

Poetry and the media: the decline of popular poetry
Article Abstract:
American culture used to include much more poetry at the beginning of the 20th century than it does now. There used to be poetry in newspapers, on the radio, and in many magazines, including Woman's Weekly and Good Housekeeping. Now poetry is limited to publications which tend to be read by writing teachers, writers and poets.
