Middle-aged Puerto Rican women as primary caregivers to the elderly: a qualitative analysis of everyday dynamics
Article Abstract:
The circumstances in which Puerto Rican middle-aged females function as caregivers to their elderly are analyzed. Owing to cultural perceptions of female roles and family interdependence and expectations of self-sufficiency, the support extended by these women is often overlooked. The analysis includes other important dynamics involved in the issue of female family members as primary caregivers to the elderly. These issues are the dynamics involved in the task, the stress experienced by the caregiver, and the latter's appraisal of her situation.

Older persons with mental retardation/developmental disabilities
Article Abstract:
The incidence of older persons having mental retardation and developmental disabilities (MR/DD) is growing due to increased longevity brought about by advances in health care. There is an integrative effort between the Aging and DD network to organize programs designed to meet the specific needs of older persons with MR/DD. The linkage between the two systems not only proved advantageous for the recipients of care but also provided a strong foundation for future collaborations.

Group work with older people who are developmentally disabled and their caregivers
Article Abstract:
Group work was done with older persons who had developmental disabilities and their caregivers to design a program that would address the identified needs of the two groups. The group mechanics involved choosing a leader for each group, group setting, interviewing potential members of the group and predetermining the size and the duration of group meeting. The groupwork enabled the two groups to foster feelings of belongingness among the members and facilitated self-expression.
