Polish social services to families of children with disabilities: practice in an emerging setting
Article Abstract:
A survey on Polish government's provision of social services to families of children with disabilities was conducted with the prior knowledge that Poland facilitates developed social work education. Open-ended questionnaires were administered to service providers from both the public and private agencies. Results showed that financial assistance and referrals to medical and rehabilitative services are the primary social services sought and provided. Furthermore, cultural and attitudinal barriers were found to prevent social services from being extended.

Social work or working for change? Action for grassroots sustainable development in Amazonia
Article Abstract:
Brazilian social workers require an alternative paradigm which encourages grassroots action for social change. The traditional, remedial role of the social worker is unsuited to the country's urgent need for sustainable development. Social work involvement for sustainable development at the grass root level in Brazil has been successful in achieving the developmental goals. The need for an appropriate form of social work is more urgent in the Amazonian region where exploitation and repression has caused mass poverty.
