Protective personality characteristics among adolescent victims of maltreatment
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between protective personality characteristics and the results of maltreatment among female teenagers and to assess whether the development of protective behavioral attributes was related to the age of onset of maltreatment. A questionnaire was given to 33 maltreated female teenagers and to a control group of 112 female adolescents, to measure personality traits such as self-esteem, depression and control orientation. Protective characteristics were also observed more often among adolescents who were maltreated during adolescence, than among those maltreated in childhood.

Sexual abuse and the problem of embodiment
Article Abstract:
It is increasingly apparent that the gravest long-term consequences of child abuse emerge from cases that are either prolonged, extremely violent, familial or intrusively sexual. The way victims perceive living in their bodies as the result of severe sexual abuse is of consequential bearing on assessment and treatment. A study examines trauma and dissociation and relates them to the development and maintenance of survivors' sense of personal identity. Various disorders linked with sexual abuse are studied in terms of relation to the problem of embodiment.

A review of the long-term effects of child sexual abuse
Article Abstract:
Evidence suggests that sexual abuse is a problem with long-term effects. Adult women who were sexually abused as children are more likely to evince sexual dysfunction, have adolescent or adult homosexual experiences and be revictimized. Disturbed sexual functioning is manifest in male victims. Abuse by a father or stepfather and that entailing penetration brings greater long-term harm. The use of force or threat is linked with greater harm, while extended abuse is linked with greater impact.
