Rethinking the American dream: reactions of the media to 'The Bell Curve.' (Richard J. Herrstein and Charles Murray's The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life)
Article Abstract:
Richard Herrstein and Charles Murray's social commentary, 'The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life' is a thought-provoking book. It advances its authors' views that American society is being cognitively partitioned into a highly intelligent group and a low-intelligent underclass. Although the book is not 'fully persuasive,' it drew a wide range of reactions from literary reviewers. Based on a sampling of 125 reviews, media reaction ranged from 'uncritically supportive' to 'unfavorable' and 'purely vituperative.'

The theories of capitalistic exploitation: an examination of their context and validity
Article Abstract:
Socialist theories of capitalistic exploitation are variants of a single theme, injustice of free market system. The leftist antipathy towards capitalism might at times be unwarranted but it finds adequate justification in the unethical transactions that govern the labor and consumer markets of free enterprises. The classical liberal theory of the free market relies on profit making and is often indifferent to basic human needs. The free market needs to address the ethical content of its bargaining power to counter the socialist attack.

An artistic renaissance?
Article Abstract:
The arts and humanities have been dominated by 'modernism' and 'postmodernism' that have ignored traditional artistic and literary forms. However, a 'new renaissance' is emerging to challenge the establishment in all fields as suggested by the evidence presented in the American Arts Quarterly. The journal's philosophy, the significance of this intellectual revolution, and a number of social and cultural issues indicated by the 'culture war's' conflict over aesthetics are analyzed.
