Rohingya refugees: an ambivalent future
Article Abstract:
The fate of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh remains uncertain. Many of them remain hesitant about returning to Myanmar, formerly called Burma, and have refused to join the repatriation program supported by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The Rohingyas are Burmese Muslims who have lived as a distinct cultural group in Myanmar's western province of Arakan since the 8th century. Many of them were forced to flee into Bangladesh in 1977 and in 1990 as a result of political turmoil in the country and persecution by military authorities.

Toward a multicultural church community: a pastoral letter by Cardinal Peter Seiichi Shirayanagi of Tokyo
Article Abstract:
Cardinal Peter Seiichi Shirayanagi exhorts the laity, priests and the religious in the Archdiocese of Tokyo to minister pastorally to foreign Catholics, especially those forced into dire circumstances. The Catholic Church leader in Tokyo emphasizes that the Church should be the first to administer to their needs and help them out of their plight. He reminds members of the archdiocese to embrace these foreign Catholics in Christian love without regard for ethnic identities, in the same way that Christ renounced His divine privilege.
