Smoke constituent exposure and stage of change in black and white women cigarette smokers
Article Abstract:
A two-factor study design investigated differences in smoke constituent exposure by ethnicity and menthol preference and differences in decisional balance and habit strength by stage of change, ethnicity and menthol preference. Ninety-five women, 48 of whom were black and 47 were white while half smoked menthol cigarettes, participated in a cigarette smoking bout. A number of findings were consistent with literature. While black women smoked substantially fewer cigarettes per day, they had higher cotinine levels than white women. Black women in all stages combined also had higher negative beliefs about smoking compared to white women.

The accuracy of self-report of smoking status in pregnant women
Article Abstract:
Midwives' self-reports of smoking status of pregnant women are inaccurate, as they either misclassify or fail to identify a significant proportion of smokers. Midwife-identified nonsmokers who can be reclassified as smokers with research questionnaire and urinalysis methods, are 7.4% using the conservative estimate, 15.2% using the worst-case estimate, and 8.8% using the medium estimate. Findings suggest the need to improve the measures used to classify individuals.
