Sociology at the end of the century
Article Abstract:
Steven Seidman's postdisciplinary view of sociology fails to consider that sociology is a discipline that involves both discourse and writing. His vision does not include ethnography as an integral part of the new social theory. An examination of the new ethnographic writing in light of Seidman's kind of moral pragmatic approach to sociology, however, provide evidence to support that postmodernism and ethnographic practices are incompatible. First, the theory of writing cannot be separated into separate disciplines as proposed by Seidman. Second, writing social theory should not be influenced by moral claims or moral perspectives.

The political unconscious of the university professor
Article Abstract:
Steven Seidman's argument that there is a political unconscious to the human sciences is a kind of postmodern pragmatism envisioned by other poststructural theorists. It suggests that the elimination of the boundaries that separate the disciplines of the human sciences is the solution to the culture wars that seem to plague universities. This kind of pragmatism, however, is not the answer because it ties knowledge to the identity of the university. Furthermore, it marginalizes the disciplines that create knowledge.

Pragmatism & sociology: a response to Clough, Denzin and Richardson
Article Abstract:
The pragmatic approach to sociology supports the idea that the discipline of sociology should be presented in ways that would make knowledge as a practical tool for reaching a social truth. It recommends a flexible, inventive and practical approach to analyze issues, concepts and theories. It also proposes using discursive strategies that would consider the implications and consequences of a position, including ethical and political considerations.
