Five bridges with new designs and materials are helping to create a third golden age of bridge building, where electromagnetic dampers and giant underwater shock absorbers resist the kinetic energy of wind, quakes and collisions. Engineers are planning to connect Australia and Antarctica, Alaska and Russia, Spain and Morocco, and India and Sri Lanka.
