The automatic evaluation of pictures
Article Abstract:
Automatic evaluation of pictures of objects can occur in the presence or absence of an explicit evaluation goal. Experiments reveal that the speed of response to targets is affected by prime congruence. Such relationship explains why the response to words preceded by a same-valence picture is quicker than words preceded by a picture of a different valence. Under a paradigm without explicit instructions to evaluate, moderately and extremely evaluated pictures of objects produce the same automatic evaluative reactions.
