The future of resettlement
Article Abstract:
The US Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) has come up with the Private Resettlement Program that will transfer responsibility for distribution of financial and medical aid for refugees from the states to voluntary agencies. The program seeks to guarantee transitional support, as well as case management and potential job placement, of newly-arrived refugees that are not entitled to federal public assistance. The voluntary agencies have direct access to refugees and can provide services based on individual relationships between the case manager and the refugee.

The Multiethnic Placement Act: implications for social work practice
Article Abstract:
The Multiethnic Placement Act of 1994 prohibits federally-funded social work agencies from taking into account only race, culture and ethnicity in adoption placement decisions. The Department of Health and Human Services, issued certain guidelines for the child placement agencies to follow in Apr. 1995. Social workers are allowed to inquire into the feelings of the prospective families about adopting a child belonging to a different race, ethnicity and culture. However, they have to be careful in making their decisions within the law.

Article Abstract:
Rituals play important roles in the socio-cultural lives of Maya refugees settled in Indian town, Florida. The organization of religio-cultural events on certain occasions generates feelings of togetherness among Maya refugees. Organizers of these events make careful planning to impart desired socio-cultural and political effects to the participants. The events have given birth to new Maya leadership in exile. These new leaders are trying to lead a Maya renaissance based on pan-Maya unity.
