The philosophy of the street in Ghana: mammy wagons and their mottos - a research note
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the handpainted mottos found in the popular mode of transportation in Ghana, West Africa, called mammy wagons was performed. It revealed that the handpainted messages were a form of urban folklore. The mottos were painted in Arabic, Pidgin, English and local dialects. Flowers, animals and birds were also painted in the backs, fronts and sides of the mammy wagons. It was observed that the mottos demonstrated a trial-ridden society and the high proportion of urban Ghanians who were members of Christian religions.

La Pistola y El Corazon: protest and passion in Mexican-American popular music
Article Abstract:
Popular Mexican-American music has been used to sing passionate tales of love and the glorious past of the people, as well as to protest the status given the Mexicans in America. The three factors which shaped Mexican-American music are the ancient Indian civilizations of Mexico, the Spanish cultural influence and West African culture brought by the slaves. In the 1970s, the music group, Los Lobos, popularized Mexican-American music in America and helped the Hispanic youth of America find their cultural identity.
