Shanghai's motion picture attendance has significantly declined since 1995. Increased ticket prices and greater entertainment options mean public consumption needs to be stimulated, competition between theaters increased, and advertising strengthened.

The editorial board of China's Cinema Art periodical has determined the most popular motion pictures since 1996. Films in 1998 earning the highest receipts tended to have high-quality production values and carefully-designed marketing strategies.
