Transactions in symbolic resources: a resource dependence model of congressional deliberation
Article Abstract:
Texts of deliberations in the US Congress regarding the foreign corrupt practices case in 1975-1977 involving major US multinational corporations and the federal government are analyzed using a modified version of Stephen Toulmin's 'field-specific reasoning.' Results indicate that Congress has developed an institutionalized process of deliberation that generates values. These values are highly general, cathected concepts of ideal social, economic and political states. The embeddedness of deliberation in overlapping networks of issues, existing laws, governmental organs, congressional committees, legislative careers and constituencies is also examined.

These principles are: (1) under specified conditions, status, formal position and sentiment all structure a group's power and prestige inequality; (2) congruence and incongruence among structures will affect their strength as organizing principles; and (3) the number of organizing bases will affect efficiency of the structuring process. The results indicate confirmation for the three principles.

Presenting the self, the social body and the olfactory: Managing smells in everyday life experiences
Article Abstract:
The way in which respondents react to bodily odors and how they go about maintaining acceptable bodily scents to facilitate social interaction is explored. The study indicates that respondents equate foul odors with social and moral defilement, and this affects how they view social others, adopting attitudes and behaviors of social inclusion and exclusion.
