Upgrading computer systems: one authority's experience
Article Abstract:
The Columbus, Ohio, Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) abandoned their original computing environment in favor of the 'open,' UNIX-based client/server computing environment. This decision was reached after management discovered that its aging computers were increasingly becoming costly to maintain and less dependable to use. For the project, Novadyne Computer Systems Inc. and Creative Computer Solutions Inc. were hired to manage the transition to the new hardware and software. Their main task was to upgrade the McDonnell Douglas 9250 of CMHA with SUN Microsystems' RISC-based multiprocessor system that employs the SOLARIS operating system. The CMHA staff was prepared for the transformation by providing a software that teaches how UNIX functions on employees' computers and by conducting UNIX training classes. This transition resulted in higher productivity and streamlined processes for the agency.
