Measuring the effects of benefits and taxes on income and poverty
Article Abstract:
The evolution of a research programme at the Bureau of the Census to widen the definition of income from the original pre-tax, post-transfer concept is described. The bureau's efforts have resulted in the creation of a new series of reports that provide a comprehensive picture of the effects of taxes and non-cash benefits (from both the public and private sectors) on income distributional measures and the prevalence of poverty.

Age-adjustment of income inequality trends: a methodological critique
Article Abstract:
A comparative assessment of the Paglin-type measure and an alternative age-adjustment procedure, based on an Entropy measure of dispersion, reveals that the former measure exaggerates the importance of age on profiles of trends in income inequality by more than 60%. The entropy measure allows accurate identification of age-related variations.
