Analysis: The high cost of safety
Article Abstract:
The maritime community has revised the state of its safety equipment, especially communications systems, personal floatation devices, and emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs). While all sailors and their craft face some element of danger, it is more likely to strike ill-equipped and under-experienced crews, and certain precautions taken before and during a voyage can minimize the possibility of accidents at sea.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations arm that sets standards of safety at sea is struggling to phase in the Global Marine Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) as a worldwide emergency service for mariners. While keeping pace with the evolving technology tested by the IMO, the biggest challenge has been the implementation of the new GMDSS standards and operating procedures.

The lowdown on digital selective calling

Not all digital selective calling (DSC) radios are the same that is while the more advanced radios approved for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention vessels offer full DSC capability and enhanced functions, the basic models do not meet all SOLAS requirements and offer fewer features. Several guidelines for the installation and use of DSC radios are listed.
