More fishing enthusiasts occupying the same space makes new rules a welcome thing. Rules instituted in states nationwide aim to boost the quality of the fishing experience for all, at the expense of quantity. Fishing strategies in the light of new rules are detailed.

Many states are experimenting with minimum size limits in managing their fisheries. In Alaska maximum size limits are protecting wild rainbow fisheries. Some areas in northern Canada have catch-and-release requirements to protect trophy fish.

The striped bass was once abundant but overfishing threatened its existence. A controversial issue as to whether the striped bass should be declared a gamefish has arisen due to interests of profiteering commercial fishermen.
