The world of boating in reality is easily understood if it is analyzed into opposing halves since certain essential truths apply whether the boat is kept on mooring or in a marina. Marinas have one big point in their favor and that is a sense of community, in comparison moorings comprise a spirit of freedom and individuality.

Woodson K. Woods has built an interpretation of the "Lynx," an historic Baltimore clipper launched for the War of 1812. Woods incorporated many modern systems to accommodate Coast Guard specifications. The new boat and its owner regularly compete in mock battles with other tall ships.

The Rolex Transatlantic Challenge is an update of the Great Ocean Race of 1905, which ran from New York Harbor to Cowes, England. The centennial edition of the Transpac, Los Angeles to Honolulu, would start in July 2005.
