Several blocks for sailboats were examined using the friction test, working load, usability, structure and price. These are the Barton BRSS7, Harken 1586, Harken 1969, Lewmar 1801, Barton BCW1452, Harken 1609, Lewmar 8305, Ronstan RF6741 and Schaefer 1199.

The use of carbon-fiber spars in sailboats is discussed. Carbon fibers are nine times stronger than aluminum and 30 times stronger than steel. These exotic materials were first used in sailing cruisers where they were popularly used in unstayed spars.
