Keeping oil and water apart
Article Abstract:
Stringent environmental regulations governing marine propulsion lubricants have highlighted the importance of developing leak-free stern seals. Companies such as Blohm and Voss AG and John Crane Inc. have developed new stern seal systems that enhance propulsion system integrity. Blohm and Voss' new Simplex-Compact 2000 airspace seal features several lip seals to prevent water and lubricant from mixing. John Crane's coastGuard system uses a face seal in conjunction with several other types of lip seals to prevent leakage.
