Ecuador
Article Abstract:
Ecuador is on the northwest coast of South America and is the smallest of the Andean countries. Its tourism market comprises travellers from Colombia and Peru, high income travellers from Europe and North American and young independent travellers. There has been large growth in ecotourism, and specialized nature tourism has developed in the country. Tourism is the fourth largest export earner, and the industry employed 1.5% of the population in 1996. There is excess capacity in the hotel sector due to the lack of external promotion of the country as a tourist destination. Air arrivals accounted for 64% of total arrivals in 1995, and the fall in land arrivals is due to the lack of safety and poor maintenance of the road network.

It offers a wide range of accommodation, and is particularly linked with all-inclusive resorts.
