Article Abstract:
There were 36 new rollercoaster rides built and opened in 1997, bringing the total number in the world to about 500. Custom Coasters International of Ohio built 3 traditional wooden type coasters for parks in France and Spain. Steel rollercoasters are initially more expensive than wooden structures, although are cheaper to maintain. The chance of a rider being injured on an amusement ride is 0.00002%, making the journey to the park more dangerous. Rollercoasters are often the major attraction at theme parks. There are many new rides planned for 1998.

Free falling
Article Abstract:
Sky Fun 1's 300 ft high Skycoaster at Million Dollar Mulligan in Kissimmee, FL, is much larger than other Skycoasters. It has proved extremely popular with visitors, even though riding on it appears to be very frightening. The rider is hoisted up in a harness, and then releases a ripchord in order to swing at great speed as if on a giant swing. The feeling of freefalling for around 50 ft before the main cables take the rider's weight can be very exhilarating.

New from old
Article Abstract:
The amusement ride industry is increasingly turning to the past for inspiration as it develops new rides. In this way, it is benefiting from a growing nostalgia among amusement park clients for traditional forms of entertainment. Many manufacturers are now revitalizing old amusement ride technology and presenting it in an attractive way for visitors to modern amusement parks. Amusement park operators are also looking increasingly at refurbishing older rides.
