Playing safe
Article Abstract:
UK organisations, the National Children's Play and Recreation Unit (NCPRU) and National Playing Fields Association (NPFA) have developed guidance on children's play areas. The NPFA recommends six acres of recreational space per thousand population. Play space should be available outside the home and five minutes walk away. More sophisticted facilities should be no further than 15 minutes away. The NCPRU emphasises safety aspects of fixed equipment areas. However, imaginative design is essential to maximise usage.

Playing for keeps
Article Abstract:
The recent Playing for Local Government seminar organised by the National Voluntary Council for Children's Play (NVCCP) looked at the work of local authorities which already provide a high standard of play services. It also considered opportunities for local authorities and voluntary organisations to improve their provision. Children's play is both a duty and an opportunity for local authorities, according to the NVCCP.
