The good the bad and the ugly
Article Abstract:
The large screen motion picture industry is beginning to change. There are signs of more glamour in the industry and more films are being produced. The usual output has been four or five per year, but 11 films will be released in 1997, and there may be over 50 in the succeeding three years. The reasons for the increase include the development of more stand-alone cinemas demanding more variety, an increase in the number of films shown per year, and the development of competing markets. Information about some of the new films is included, together with discussion about finance in the sector.

Big plans for ISTC
Article Abstract:
The International Space Theatres Consortium plans to change its name to Giant Screen Theatres Association. Its 1998 meeting, in Sydney Australia, included the showing of nine large format films including a special preview showing of the 3D film 'T-Rex.' Film Producer Greg MacGillivray pointed out how difficult it was to make profits from a 15perf/70mm film despite the success of his film 'Everest.' The number of visitors to the meeting were reduced by half due to the cost of travel to Australia.

On with the show
Article Abstract:
Developing technology and investment will ensure the future of large format films, although the industry should be prepared to face company failures up to the year 2004. The number of producers is expected to fall due to the high level of initial expenditure required to buy the necessary film-making equipment. The market will be helped by a reduction in the number of single screen sites, which will provide ample opportunity for the installation of facilities in multiplex sites.
