The Mashantucket Pequot tribe's proposed purchase of three small rural towns in Connecticut for annexation to their reservation has generated a bitter controversy. Non-Indian residents have expressed their opposition to the plan, claiming that it is simple greed on the part of the tribe.

Villagers of Allakaket and Alatna, both located across the Koyukuk River, have rebuilt their devastated communities months after the river's swelling in Aug. 28, 1994. The flood, which swept off houses but did not claim any lives, was the biggest to hit the area in 100 years.
