Automobile rental companies offer low rates to consumers, but often have additional charges that greatly increase the cost of renting a car. The additional charges are not often disclosed at the time a reservation is made, so customers are not always properly informed. Changes may result from public outcry.

Consumers who need a long-term car rental should shop carefully to obtain the best price, as price can vary greatly depending on how the rental company structures its pricing. Monthly rates are usually the lowest rate available and these are more often offered by independent companies.
