A 1,000-year chain of thinkers
Article Abstract:
It is possible to trace a chain of influential scientific thought throughout the second Christian millennium. The millennium opened with the publication of Abdulla ibn Sina's first philosophical work, and eclectic Arab thinkers, who were scientists as much as writers, dominated the first two centuries of the millennium. Frederick II, who was born in 1195, disseminated new thought in science and the arts, and fundamental thought was perpetuated by Marco Polo, who died in 1324. The chain of scientific thought progressed to include Michelangelo, Isaac Newton, Immanuel Kant, Niel Abel, Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin and Alexander Fleming.

A different kind of Universe
Article Abstract:
The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory's findings since it was launched in Apr 1992 was the subject of a symposium held at Washington University, St. Louis, MO, Oct 15-17, 1992. This satellite-borne observatory used the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) to identify quasar 3C279 as the most intense producer of gamma rays yet detected. EGRET's failure to detect gamma rays in the Small Magellanic Cloud undermined the theory that most of the cosmic ray background derives from outside the Milky Way Galaxy. Compton obtained data on gamma ray bursts that remain difficult to interpret.
