A B-cell coactivator of octamer-binding transcription factors
Article Abstract:
The B-cell factor, Bob1, which is related to the lymphoid-restricted octamer-binding factor Oct-2 and Oct-1, is isolated using the modified yeast one-hybrid assay. Transfection experiments reveal that the B-cell factor enhances the Oct-1-mediated promoter activity. The specific iteration of B-cell factor with Oct-1 or Oct-2 influences the coactivation properties of the B-cell factor. The coactivation characteristics are destroyed by the elimination of the octamer motif.

Amplification of calcium-induced gene transcription by nitric oxide in neuronal cells
Article Abstract:
Nitric oxide (NO) can act as an amplifier of calcium signals in neuronal cells, even though it has no evident effect on transcription by itself. For amplification to occur Ca2+ and NO action have to coincide. The induction of gene activity following NO-amplified calcium action involves protein kinase A-dependent activation of the transcription factor. It is possible that NO can be used to speed up or enhance weak synapses activity in the brain.

Smad3 and Smad4 cooperate with c-Jun/c-Fos to mediate TGF-beta-induced transcription
Article Abstract:
Transforming growth factor-beta and Smad proteins transcriptionally induce several AP1-regulated promoters. The complexes they form are translocated into the nucleus and regulate ligand-induced gene transcription. A new study measures the effects of Smads, c-Jun and c-Fos, on luciferase expression from AP-1 promoters when TGF-beta is present or active. Details of the study are presented.
