A new strategy for genome sequencing
Article Abstract:
Genomes are effectively sequenced without any physical mapping by sequence-tagged connectors (STC) using bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones as sequencing agents. The method used at the Human Genome Project requires less effort and cost to produce resolution maps. A large number of laboratories can work on one project as BAC clones are available at resource or commercial organizations. The STC approach enables genome sequencing of smaller organisms, sequencing of selective chromosomal regions and gives clones for study even during the initial sequencing stages.

Forensic evidence by DNA sequencing
Article Abstract:
DNA sequencing was used as evidence for the first time in a rape case in Sweden to match the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 strains to prove that the man had raped and given HIV to the woman. The test was conducted on their blood and that of 10 intravenous drug users and 20 gay men from the region to give a reasonable sample. Many of the pol gene amino acids matched between the man and woman and not with the controls. The defendant lost his appeal and was refused supreme court review.

Gathering the evidence on medical marijuana
Article Abstract:
The U.S. Supreme Court has been listening to arguments from proponents of the medical value of marijuana, and must decide whether states such as California that have legalized marijuana for medical use, have broken federal law. Since marijuana was made illegal in the 1960s, scientists have not been able to do research to determine the medical advantages of the drug.
